The Glenturret’s Three New Releases:
Triple Wood, Sherry, and Peated

Glenturret Core RangeThe Glenturret Distillery – often known as The Famous Grouse Experience – produces, as the latter name suggests, one of the components used in The Famous Grouse blended scotch whisky.

The distillery itself is a nice little place to visit with a great cafe. Their malts weren’t that widely known, being often kept for the blend or bottled in small amounts – for example I’m quite fond of their 10yo which you can find when you look.

That said, most of the good stuff was/is bottled by independent bottlers. However, now Glenturret has launched their own branded single malts, and it’s about time too!

Review: Old Pulteney Flotilla 2005

Info: The release is limited to 12,000 bottles that have been matured in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels. It follows the launch of Flotilla 2000 and Flotilla 2004.
Colour: Light straw gold.
Nose: Light, slight ozone hints; the coastal nature maybe. A creamy bourbon background with a hint of nuts. After some time the nuts disappear leaving a sweet caramel tone.
Palate: Lighter and much sweeter than expected (in a good way), medium oils with ground spices that grow after a while. Gentle fruits with almost a white wine quality. Salted caramels.

Glen Moray 18yo (1973)

Moray1973Info: A bottle of tasting stock that Glen Moray had at TWE show this year. So good I took a sample away to consider properly. From the 1970’s when the distillery still used a proportion of peated malt in its mix.
Colour: Lightly golden, nice and natural looking.
Nose: A classically old type of nose, small hints of peat, beautiful bourbon barrel background. Toffee notes along with ripe citrus fruits.
Palate: Medium oils covering your palate with an instantly accessible and relaxing malt. It’s packed with rich flavours. Restrained on the spices which makes it massively easy drinking. There’s almost a slight dusty tone to it. The tiny amount of peat helps give it a nice little bit of depth just to give it that bit more weight.

Review: Highland Park 25 year old

Info: One of my favourite drams… I seem to have forgotten to review it!
Colour: Rich autumn gold.
Nose: Old heathery mushy peaty heathland on a sweet smelling summer evening. There’s some older slightly peppery oak notes. Hints of Love Heart sweets.
Palate: Fairly oily and smooth, slightly waxy with spices gently building. Backdrop of sweet malt and hints of smoke puffs. Almost a little fizzy on your tongue.
Finish: Gently slow and long, reminiscent of glowing embers… warming on your chest and nicely relaxing.

Review: The Dalmore 21

Info: A one off release of 8000 bottles of which only 1200 will remain in the UK. Matured initially in American white oak casks for 10 years and then transferred into first fill Matusalem oloroso sherry butts for the last 11 years.
Colour: Dark autumnal rusty gold.
Nose: Rich, fruity and punchy… you may expect that from Dalmore and you won’t be disappointed here. It’s got bucketloads of pungent stewed winter fruits along with a deep seville orange marmalade, vanilla pods and hints of old leather and milk chocolate. Dunnage warehouse hints.

Review: Littlemill 25 Year Old Private Cellar Edition

Info: The Loch Lomond Group are releasing this 25 year old Littlemill, whisky from a distillery which has long gone, destroyed by fire in 2004 and now mostly demolished. Selected from a mix of 10 American and European oak casks which were then married together and finished in Oloroso sherry casks. 1500 bottles, bottle includes a mini.
Legs: Thick, slow, oily legs.
Colour: Autumnal bold, bright gold.
Nose: Fairly powerful nose, quite high alcohol vapours. Behind the vapours are sweet notes of barley, gentle hints of peat and stewed autumn fruits. There’s a rubbery quality, coming from the sherry influence. After a while there’s a nuttyness that comes out a little.

Review: Glenfiddich The Original

Info: Recreated and inspired by Glenfiddich Straight Malt’s taste profile that was first introduced in 1963. NAS.
Colour: Lightly golden to straw.
Nose: Much more of a wine-like hit on the nose to start with than I was expecting. Closely followed up by malt, a handful of nuts, touches of smoke (cask char? a tiny bit of peated malt?), and hints of cut grass and leather. Back to white wine type notes again before back to mashed malt and a fudgey sweetness which comes out after a while.
Palate: It’s medium oily on the palate, thicker than I expected for 40%. It’s very easy, fairly velvety with just a mere hint of spices followed by the grassy malt and some brown sugar sweetness. Not much of the wine found on the nose at first, although after more time in the glass and in your mouth it’s certainly there if you look, it’s rather nice.

Review: Paul John Bold

BoldPaul John’s “Bold” Whisky – 46%abv

Info: Peated single malt whisky from Goa, India. Non chill filtered, no colouring. Matured in American oak for 4 to 5 years, with the peat coming from Islay and being imported to India specially.
Colour: Golden, hints of ripe barley.
Nose: Peaty, an Islay style peat but with a background of heat, sundried heat. There’s certainly a slight sweet floralness about it, sometimes I’d associate that with an Orkey type tone. Some other tasting notes from Twitter have suggested condensed milk type sweetness.
Palate: There’s a gentle Islay style peat that is at the forefront but doesn’t dominate at all, behind that is a host of great flavours, subtly sweet barley and a dryness as if you were sitting in a dessert. It’s medium in thickness, remaining reasonably light and zippy. Hints of cracked black pepper & clove.

Review: Bowmore Mizunara Cask Finish

Info: This has been made up of different vintages from the 1990s (so around 15-25 years old), and then finished in Japanese Mizunara oak which is the first time that Mizunara casks have been exported from Japan. There’s 2000 bottles.
Colour: Fully golden, setting evening sun.
Nose: Straight away there’s a great waft of coastal peat that you’d come to expect from Bowmore, although it seems slightly more at the fore than on general releases. However behind it there’s all sorts of goodies, and a sweetness that reminds me of Love Heart sweets. There’s also definitely a sour touch there as well which balances out the sweetness.
