Lord Elcho – New NAS Blended Scotch from Wemyss Malts

“Wemyss Malts is taking its second step into the world of Blended Scotch by adding a non-aged version of Lord Elcho to its range.

Lord Elcho 15yo was launched in 2012 and we are delighted to be adding another member of the family.

The nose on the new whisky is fresh and lively, with notes of fruit salad and fragrant wood shavings. The palate is full and soft, with waves of chewy caramel and a warm spiciness. Its finish is dry and long, with hints of crushed nuts.”

On to my quick wee review…

Lord Elcho – NAS – 40% OB

Colour: Light, bright gold.

Nose: Malty and light, some honeycomb and nuts.

Palate: Light, sweet and easy, gently summery with a slight butteriness, very drinkable. The honeyness and slight vanilla fudge come through well along with a few nuts.

Finish: Very slightly hot. Fairly long.

Thoughts: You can tell there’s maybe some younger whisky here, but it’s treated well and shows some good barley character alongside gentle sweetness.

Update: A previous version of this post contained an incorrect price based on an error found on Whisky Exchange’s site… that’s now been fixed by them and this post updated to reflect the lower price. Previously it was incorrectly listed as quite a lot more which I wasn’t entirely convinced was good value… however at £25 this is now very much a player in this section of the market… so if you want a good blend at a decent price then this is worth a look.
